Nick Rekenthaler
I am a PhD Candidate in Sociology at NYU. I am currently on the job market (2026-2027).
My research tends to draw from the sociology of culture, medical sociology and mental health, political sociology, and social theory.
My dissertation, “Private Troubles as Public Issues: Psychotherapy’s Ethical Transformation” leverages archival work and nearly 150 interviews with therapists and clients to trace the process by which psychotherapy incorporated the “sociological imagination” alongside its historically individual, psychological approach.
I received a BA (Philosophy; Psychology) from the University of Chicago, a MA (Humanities) from the University of Chicago, and a MFA (Fiction) from New York University.
